List of Startup Weekend Toronto Pitches

Startup Weekend came to Toronto for the first time and with it, a flurry of unexpected activity. From 41 initial pitches, these are the 12 projects that started to gain some traction before the weekend was over.

The event itself was interactive and engaging. On the first night, anyone with an idea was invited to give a brief shotgun style pitch to the audience. An informal and fast pace provided an effective shield against nerves and judgment. Throughout the weekend, there were interesting presentations by successful businesspeople while groups feverishly hashed out ideas. At the end of the event, a few ideas remained and these became the basis for the final presentations.

Below is a quick list of the ideas and general concepts that were presented at the 2010 Startup Weekend Toronto :

N20: Need Second Opinion

Doctors often rely on the experience of their colleagues to obtain a second opinion to consider different courses of treatment. In conjunction with the Sick Kids hospital, this iOS FaceTime app will allow practitioners to obtain a second opinion from doctors who can not be present for a physical examination.

Map Based Hiring

Rather then relying on geographically broad employment searches, this service could allow you to search for employment or recruit people locally.

RateHub.ca

http://ratehub.ca/

Assembles the published mortgage rates of lenders. Unbiased and easy to use, this is an all-in-one resource for people looking for information about mortgages.

Voter Vision

http://twitter.com/votervision

Evaluating politicians on their merit can be a difficult and time consuming task. This online service strives to standardize the platforms of regional, provincial and national political candidates.

Lookals

http://www.lookals.com/

Almost every advertising medium has surplus advertising slots available in one form or another. This service strives to release this opportunity to small and medium sized enterprises that otherwise may not be able to afford exposure.

Mobile Fashion

Search Google for “Cool T-Shirt” and see what you come up with. The result will be a mash of t-shirts, advertising and well, t-shirts that just aren’t cool. This service aims to provide a local twist on product matching. Looking for a cool belt? This service will list a number of local retailers who just might have the cool belt you’re looking for.

Schedify

http://schedify.blogspot.com/

A smart part of Freshbook‘s pitch is that they say they will save small businesses time by moving their invoicing away from Word and Excel and onto the web. Schedify has these same advantages but in place of invoicing, Schedify focuses on scheduling. From restaurants that loose hundreds of hours to in-and-out scheduling to any business that employs part-time labor, this application could save time.

Return On Travel

A buy-and-sell service that uses travelers in place of couriers. In many parts of the world, products that we take for granted in North America have either not yet been released or are simply not available. Currently, the iPhone 4 is a good example where in many Eastern countries, the device can be valued well over $1000. Return On Travel could pair travelers with people who are willing to pay for products with those who have access to them.

Online TV Programmable System

This service could allow you to createa custom guide for online TV.

Sponsorship Gold

This service could link event sponsors with event planners.

Twitsift

Twitters suggestions about who to follow could be a heck of a lot better. There must be a better way to find people that are interesting and useful. The Twistsift service could make this a possibility.

Task Avenue

http://taskave.com/

This iOS app is a solution to a common problem. Far too often, people say things such as, “the next time I’m at the Home Depot, I need to buy a hammer”. This app relies on geolocation and basic task-list type input to remind you to buy that hammer when you’re at the store.
